How does your school make use of school and/or teacher websites?
Last year 2014-15 we started to build our personal websites on google. We used a few hours of professional development to get them up and running. The main problem that I’m running into is the lack of time to maintain and update my site.
How are you currently utilizing technology for learning?
I have my students collaborate on their Exploravision project. They use Google docs to communicate with each other and me. I have also had my student write essays for the Dupont Challenge, which has wonderful global themes. I use the Ipads sparingly. My students use them to access the internet, Khan Academy, share documents through Google, work on power point presentations, and vernier video physics. I use the computer and Smartboard for showing work and reviewing so I can then share notes with students who were gone.
What sites and tools are colleagues in your building using?
The teachers I had a chance to talk with use Google docs for students to collaborate with each other. This is the direction that the district had pushed. The English teachers use the Pioneer Library for research and reference articles. In the school district we have started to use Canvas. Some teachers have been using Canvas on a limited bases.
Is there a system for evaluating student technology literacy in your school?
If so, how effective or helpful have you found the assessment? The State office of Education requires student to take one computer tech class at the high school level. The class is underwhelming. It focuses on turning on a computer and how to save a file. Things that I have argued should be taught at the elementary level. As a district we don’t have an assessment to technology literacy.
What tools that are not presently available, would help to achieve district objectives?
Canvas or Blackboard. The district is working on rolling this out for use in the classroom. I'm excited to try this out in my own classroom and with my students.
